A Festive Winter : For Newcomers in Canada

It's that time of the year where my childhood fantasy to enjoy Christmas in a foreign land, comes true.I eagerly await to witness the festivities with the snow-filled roads, lanterns and lights, the huge Xmas trees and our very own Uncle Santa. No matter your age, I believe, you are always a kid by heart. Instead of whining and crying about the cold, why not layer up and step out to celebrate Christmas.
This post is for all my fellow immigrants, old and new where I aim to provide a guide to celebrating the winter, in and around Toronto.

Must-Do's in Winter
  • Visit the Christmas market at the Distillery District, located in downtown Toronto. Locals feature their products and It is a holiday tradition you cannot miss. Already open, this event goes up to Dec 22nd. Entry is available for a nominal fee.
  • Meet Uncle Santa: There are many malls around the city, where you can take your kids to meet Uncle Santa and enjoy the Christmas Toy Train
  • The Boxing Day Sale : Dec 26th, 2016 : The shopping season just gets better with The Boxing Day Sale, held every year in Ontario, on Dec 26th. It is a mega sale where you can find almost anything and everything at a good bargain. It is believed that in the olden days, employees and servants would receive gifts from their masters, a day after Christmas, and hence this tradition is followed. Gift yourself the best you want on this day. Start your day early in the morning or it is hard to get a parking spot.
  • Touring The Eaton Centre: One of the biggest malls in Toronto, The Eaton Centre is a place to visit, especially during Christmas, as it is one of the best-decorated places in Toronto.
Weekend Getaways
  • Winter Ski Resorts: Close to Toronto, there are many winter ski resorts, where you can book a day or two and enjoy with your family.
  • Winter Cottages: If you are looking to take a break with your family and friends, book a cottage nearby, in places up north like Orillia, Muskoka and more.
  • If you are a couple, there are many Winter Spa Packages offered within the city and outside for a relaxing holiday.
